Classes - Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why would I take classes with Swing ConneXion?
A: Because our team of teachers is virtually the best in Montreal! Zack Richard and Maryse Lebeau, founders of SCX, are amongst the only swing dance professionals in Canada, and have been traveling extensively to teach: Paris, Toulouse, Sydney, Londres, San Diego, Victoria, Toronto, Québec, Berlin... They're also experimented coaches who have helped countless teams and individuals in their competition goals: Swinging Air Force, Woodside Jumpers, Port-O-Swing-ConneXion, SAF All Bal Team, Balboa ConneXion... Q: Can I try out a class?
A: To try out a class, nothing better than
les Bobards every Wednesday. A, intro class is offered at 8:30PM and, afterwards, you can enjoy the upbeat music and spirited energy of the Swing ConneXion House Band.
Q: Do I have to have special clothes to dance swing?
A: In classes, we recommend anything light that you feel comfortable in. To go out dancing, regardless of what you're actually wearing (vintage attire, jeans and t-shirt), make sure you look good! Hygiene is especially important when dancing with another person.
Q: What about shoes? I've seen dancers with special shoes...
A: Granted, shoes are really important in swing dance, but you can start with light sneakers. A popular solution is to buy a comfortable pair of shoes and have them re-soled. And there are also good dance stores in Montreal (Danz, Rossetti) and also on the web (DanceStore.com) .
Q: Do I need a partner for the classes?
A: Absolutely not! We rotate paratners during the classes, except for special classes such as Aerials or Performance classes. It is however highly recommended to come with a partner to preserve the balance between leads and follows.
Q: What is swing?
A: Go through our
video section to see examples! Basically swing is a family of dances (rather than a dance in particular) and it includes Lindy Hop, Charleston, Balboa, Shag and many others. It originated in the 1920s and was developped in the 30s and 40s, before giving birth to rock'n roll in the late 50s and losing its appeal to younger people. These days though, it's especially the younger people who rediscover this incredible dance... Consult

Q: I did level W at school XYZ... Can I register for an advanced class at Swing ConneXion?
A: We definitely recommend taking it from the start, but you can also get an evaluation of your level in a private lesson to know where you'll get the most out of the class.
Q: I've danced *insert dance here* before, even though I didn't do any swing. Can I begin in a higher level?
A: Swing has a lot of specificities, and it's important to know them before advancing to higher levels. It's probable though that previous dance experience enables you to learn faster, so a series of private classes might be ideal if you want to fast-track to more advanced classes!
